Dental Crowns

If you’re self-conscious about your smile due to cracked, broken, decayed or worn teeth, we can bring back your healthy, natural-looking smile with crowns. A filling can restore a small defect in a tooth, but a crown is the most durable, strongest way to restore a tooth with extensive damage, front or back for the long term. With all the materials and techniques modern dentistry has to offer, crowns can be totally natural looking.

Additional benefits of crowns are correcting bite problems, closing spaces between teeth, changing the angulations of teeth, and they can be used to replace missing teeth permanently, as part of a bridge, or over an implant.

Before and after dental crowns done at MK Dentist in Mount Kisco, NYA crown (or cap) is a dental restoration that totally covers the tooth, strengthening and protecting it when it is too weak for a filling.  Crowns can be used to protect teeth which have large worn fillings, where there is not enough tooth structure to allow for another filling.  They are also used to protect weakened teeth which have cracks or previous root canal treatment. They are used to enhance one’s smile.

The process of making a crown involves removing any decay and defective filling and then shaping the tooth.  An impression of the tooth is taken which is usually sent to a dental laboratory.  From there specially trained technicians will custom craft each individual crown to match the desired size, shape and shade of your natural teeth.

A crown usually takes two appointments to make.  After the tooth is made numb, it is shaped and the impression is taken.  At the end of the visit, a plastic temporary crown will be placed.  At the next visit, the new crown will be fitted and cemented in place.  The crown is not only checked for the fit on the tooth that it was made for but also for the fit against adjacent teeth and teeth in the opposite arch.  The color and shape of the crown are also checked against the other teeth in the mouth to assure a great looking smile.

Crowns can be made of many different materials such as porcelain, porcelain fused to an invisible gold substructure, or gold baked onto a metal free substructure. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Just as any other restoration, crowns will need to be replaced at some point, but with proper care and maintenance, they will provide years of service.
